On Friday 5 August 2016 the water Works hosted its first ‘Wild @ Water Works’ bioblitz event. As well as discovering and recording as much biodiversity as possible we had honeybee trails, DIY bird feeders and nest box building to add to the interest.
With a little help from Joe and Howie from the Dams to Darnley Countryside Ranger Service, Gabriella from Buglife, Scott from Butterfly Conservation and Robert and Marion from Eastwood Beekeepers, we welcomed around 150 people from Barrhead and beyond to get stuck in and explore the nature of the site.
Having the countryside rangers and nature experts on hand for the ‘nature safaris’ helped open our eyes to the wonderful biodiversity that exists on our doorstep. Also, having the opportunity to build nest boxes meant the children were not only helping build a home for wildlife, but also learn important practical and social skills that are vital for future development.
Most importantly the day was really good fun, so thanks everyone for coming along.
Already looking to organise more ‘nature activities’ in the future!
